The history of the Ellis Store is as fascinating as its beauty. The Lincoln County War, which raged from 1878 until 1881, included many famous participants such as Pat Garrett and William "Billy the Kid" Bonney.
Billy was a member of the Tunstall-Mc Sween "Regulators". A portion of these men took refuge in the Ellis Store during the five day gun battle. Billy was later held in house arrest at the Ellis Store awaiting his pardon from Governor Lew Wallace.
